Creating From Your Intuition
Creating From Your Intuition
I truly believe in the power of listening to your intuition, both as an artist and a human.
Following your gut instincts can help you carve your unique authentic path, both on your creative journey and on your journey through life.
If we want to enjoy the journey, we need to lean into the things that we truly love– the things that inspire us, excite us, and make us feel a sense of childlike curiosity. Following these creative impulses is what helps us to achieve a Flow State. This meditative state– in which we lose sense of time and all of life's problems– is what makes art addictive and therapeutic. It's what keeps artists coming back to their creative process, over and over again. It makes the creative process easy and desirable to engage in, instead of feeling like a chore.
Following your intuition makes creativity enjoyable and sustainable.
The more you love what you do, the better you will feel while you're doing it. This is great for our bodies and minds. It puts us in a state of relaxation, giving us a break from the fight-or-flight responses that can habitually become a part of our daily lives. Creating releases endorphins instead of cortisol, making us feel a sense of relaxation and well-being.
We were each given an intuition. It’s that deep trusting in your heart space, that you already know what’s best for you. Following your intuition means tuning out what everyone else is saying and tuning into your own inner voice. This voice is not demanding, judgmental, forceful, controlling or "shoulding." It comes from a place of love rather than fear.
Other people's voices, as well as our own inner critic's voice, can be very loud and domineering. Your intuition whispers rather than yells. That's why we need to become very still, quiet, grounded and centered in order to hear it. This voice makes us relax and let go, rather than tense up and try to control.
When we listen to the gentle whispers of our intuition, things seem to flow effortlessly and seamlessly. Nothing feels pressured, forced, pushed or controlled.
We are often taught at a young age how not to trust our intuition. Society tells us what to eat, how to dress, what we should go to school for, what job we should get, when we should marry, how many children we should have... The list goes on and on…
Many people think listening to your intuition, rather than society's voice, is selfish. We are taught to repress it, ignore it, and even feel a sense of guilt or shame about it. This keeps us stuck in the cult of society– it keeps us in the roles that society prefers us to play. We are taught to become a martyr for the sake of others– to put other people's wants and needs first– especially if we are women. We are taught to sacrifice our own wants and needs, and even our sense of self-worth, self-trust and inner peace. This is a clear path to bitterness and resentment. It makes us feel fearful, not loving. It makes us worse, not better.
What would happen if you started putting your own wants and needs first? What would happen if you made the brave choice to listen to your own intuition instead of listening to the culture? What would your life start to become if you began listening to that authentic part of yourself, instead of silencing it in order to be considered a "good citizen"?
What would your art become if you created from a place of centered intuition instead of outside pressure?
It's the bravest thing in the world to start listening to and trusting your intuition. That’s where your power lies and where your inner light shines!
I would love to help you thrive on your creative journey!
